CHAPTER 19

Stunned by the sight of the smoke taking the shape of a dragon and attacking the king, Red Feather barely felt his feet touch the stone steps of the pyramid as he climbed them. He did, however, wince at the crushing strength of each guard pulling him up the staircase.

Looking up, Red Feather’s heart sank at the sight at the top platform. Sitting on the platform, Jaya’s body shook with heaving sobs while her two dragons kept a close and protective presence. One stood on its hind legs with its front paws pressed against Jaya’s back, allowing the dragon to hover above her and monitor those around her. The creature hissed when Red Feather and the guards reached the platform.

The guards dragged Red Feather past Jaya and her dragons toward the king’s house where his family hovered and clung to each other at the front door. Compared to the king’s finery, his wife and children wore colorful but less elaborate clothing. Their faces reflected the disturbance Red Feather felt.

A wide and simple wooden ladder leaned against the side of the home leading to its flat stone roof. The guards shoved Red Feather toward it. His mind raced as he tried to understand what they wanted from him.

The smoke dragon threw the king on top of the roof of his home. Do they think I can heal him?

Hopeful at that thought, Red Feather climbed up the ladder and onto the flat roof.

Fighting the sense that he trod on ground reserved for royalty, Red Feather took in his surroundings. He stepped over a low stone wall running along the edges of the rooftop. Stone pots lined the walls. Some contained water while others contained plants. Turning toward the center, he saw the king sprawled on his back and a kneeling man by his side, bent forward with his ear pressed against the king’s chest.

Not knowing what else to do, Red Feather took several tentative steps toward them.

The kneeling man sat up but showed no surprise at Red Feather’s presence. Black and white paint striped the kneeling man’s body. A necklace of brightly colored feathers rested around his shoulders.

Red Feather assumed he must be a healer.

The healer spoke rapidly, but Red Feather understood nothing he said. The healer gestured for him to come closer.

Still feeling out of place, Red Feather approached the healer and king with caution until he became aware of the stillness of the king’s body.

The ruler of Xazaa lay sprawled on his back. Although considered to be a tall man in the Great Turtle Lands, the king would likely stand only as high as the shoulders of Greeta and her Northlander friends. The white paint coating his skin had cracked, forming wayward lines across his body. His large nose reminded Red Feather of a hawk, despite the large dimple in the center of his chin.

Red Feather knelt opposite the healer and pressed his own ear against the king’s chest, believing the urgency to save the king’s life mattered more than decorum.
